Bourbon is an acquired taste that many will never know. Bourbon Heritage Month

America’s Native Spirit Bourbon is celebrating heritage month. In August 2007, the United States Senate declared September as the National Bourbon Heritage Month. Bourbon whiskey is recognized by the United States Senate as a distinct American Whiskey. So join us in celebrating America’s original drink.

Facts about Bourbon

Bourbon has to be made in the United States

Can be made anywhere in the United States

Bourbon’s grain recipe has to be 51% corn

The rest can be any other grain

Most popular secondary grains are rye, wheat, and barley

Two popular kinds of bourbon are high rye and high wheat

High rye bourbon are bolder and spicier

High wheat bourbon are rare and have notes of salted caramel

Must be aged in new charred American oak barrels

There is no minimum time requirement for ageing

One year of ageing is recommended for smoother taste

It has to be distilled at under 160 proof or 80% ABV

Has to be under 125 proof to be aged in the barrel

Kentucky produces 95% of world’s bourbon


Ways to celebrate Bourbon Heritage Month

Black Americans in Bourbon Experience (Sept. 4, 11, 18, 25) – Held at the Frazier History Museum. Book your tour at fraziermuseum.org/unfiltered.

$5 Buck Bluegrass (Sept. 9, 16, 23 & 30) – Experience Louisville’s heritage through music and taste on the scenic Ohio River. Starting September 9, will be held every Thursday in September from 7-10 p.m. (21+ only) Tickets available at belleoflouisville.org/special-events.

Kentucky Southern Social (Sept. 16 -18) – This Bourbon lovers’ weekend at the Omni Louisville Hotel. Includes Old Forester 150th Anniversary Dinner, Speakeasy Dinner with Rabbit Hole founder Kaveh Zamanian, Angel’s Envy Cocktail Hour & bottle engraving, and fireside cocktails with Peerless owner Corky Taylor. Bourbon cocktails

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. Kentucky Bourbon
  • ¼ oz. Campari
  • ¾ oz. Lemon juice
  • ¾ oz. Simple syrup
  • 2-3 oz. Sweet champagne
  • 4 Dashes peach bitters

Instructions

 Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.

Add Bourbon, Campari, lemon juice, simple syrup, and peach bitters and stir just long enough to chill the liquid and combine ingredients.

Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice

Top with a floating pour of sweet champagne.

Bourbon cocktails

Ingredients

  • 1 part Basil Hayden Bourbon Whiskey
  • 3/4 part Lillet  Rosé
  • 3/4 part Martini & Rossi bitter liqueur
  • Slice of fresh ginger

Instructions

Combine ingredients over ice in a mixing glass.

Stir thoroughly.

Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and serve up.

Garnish with a slice of fresh ginger atop drink.

Bourbon cocktails

Ingredients

  • 1.5 parts Wild Turkey Bourbon
  • ½ part grenadine
  • ¾ part dry vermouth
  • ¾ fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • Orange bitters

Instructions

Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice.

Shake or Stir

Strain into a coupe glass.

Garnish with orange peel.

Bourbon Cocktail

Ingredients

  •  oz. Aperol
  • 1 oz. Punt e Mes (Italian bitter vermouth)
  • 1 Dash  Orange Bitters

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice.

Stir and pour into a stemmed cocktail glass.


Pomegranate Orange & Rosemary Bourbon Cocktail

Bourbon Cocktail

Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz. Bourbon
  • ½ orange chopped with skin on
  • ¼ cup pomegranate seeds
  • 1 sprig fresh rosemary
  • 2-3 dashes of bitters
  • 1 tsp. coconut sugar

Instructions

In a cocktail mixer add in all ingredients except for bourbon and muddle with a muddler or wood spoon until pomegranate seeds are mostly broken up.

Top with a few ice cubes, bourbon and top the lip on and shake well until outside it slightly frosted and cold.

Strain into a short cocktail glass with a large ice cube and serve.

Optional: You can garnish with some fresh rosemary, pomegranate seeds and a twist of orange zest.
